Starting something new can be intimidating, no matter what it is.

Knowing what to expect when starting therapy can be challenging. Being in a new situation where you have to be vulnerable with a stranger can be even more so, which is one of the many reasons people feel anxious and uncertain when starting therapy for the first time.

You may be unsure what to expect if you’ve never seen a therapist before. No need to worry!

Here’s what you can expect when starting therapy with one of our Bethesda therapists:

Rest assured, you will be met with kindness, compassion, and patience as you navigate starting therapy for the first time.

Most therapists will begin with an assessment to determine your current needs and find out more about your history and background.  From there, you and your therapist will identify your goals and the things you want to work on together.

Our Bethesda therapists will help you decide which areas you want to focus on during your time together and how often you will meet. Many people begin with weekly sessions, while others see their therapists more or less frequently, depending on their needs.

Sometimes, people are dismayed to find that they don’t feel better right away when starting therapy. They may find themselves feeling more depressed or anxious, or upset after some sessions. This is normal and even expected! It does not mean therapy isn’t working.

On the contrary, it means you’re building foundations for a better future. Think of it like completing a new workout routine or going to the gym for the first time after a long period away. The next day, you will probably feel fatigued and sore- but that’s just because your body has to get used to it! Working on our mental and emotional health is very much the same.
