Are you experiencing Summertime Depression and Anxiety, and wondering why you feel this way?
You may be familiar with the term “winter blues.” It describes a time of the year (the winter) when a person may feel sadder and generally more depressed than any other time of year. This is also referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder and occurs mainly in climates with less sunlight during certain times of the year.
But what about summertime depression and anxiety?
Despite the summer barbeques, pool parties, and vacations, this “reverse” Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects 5-10% of those who experience SAD! Symptoms often include increased anxiety, loss of appetite, weight loss, and trouble sleeping.
So what causes it? Well, the experts are still unsure as to what exactly causes Summer Seasonal Affective Disorder, but there are a few theories. Just know, if you feel more depressed and anxious in the Summer, you can reach out to one of our Bethesda Depression Therapists today for support.

Get Support
No matter what time of year it is, if you feel more anxious or depressed, please reach out to one of our Bethesda Therapists. It’s essential not to take signs of depression lightly.
Prioritize Sleep
Not getting enough sleep is a common trigger for depression. The longer summer days can make for late nights, as can time zone changes on vacations. Do your best to get enough rest.
Stay Active
Research has shown that regular physical activity can sometimes keep depression at bay. Just be sure to opt for cooler environments and plenty of hydration in the summer heat.
Set Boundaries
It’s easy to say yes to every summer activity or event thrown at you when you still feel pretty good during springtime. But planning ahead and setting boundaries can prevent some of the overwhelm. If you know that every year when June rolls around, you end up feeling more anxious and depressed because you have so many commitments, a little planning ahead can go a long way.
